Florals
For this year’s independent project, I decided to paint 6 different types of flowers. The reason I chose this topic is because flowers are undoubtedly very beautiful and I wanted to create a visually pleasing series of paintings that could bring joy upon the audience. The 6 flowers that can be seen are yellow lilies, magenta hibiscus, pink lotus, blue poppies, white and orange plumerias, and multicoloured tulips. Each painting was done on a 14x14 canvas with acrylic paint.
Similar to last year’s independent project, I explored my personal style. I found myself naturally drawn to using vibrant complimentary colors as well as many visible brush strokes to represent my own version of a flower’s texture while staying true to the actual flower itself. I started off by sketching out the flowers from reference photos, but later figured out that it felt a lot more natural to free hand with the paint. I would then fill in a solid colour background to allow the subject to pop. Each brush stroke had been intentionally placed making the subject more dynamic, and lively. Although this art series is mostly just visual, I intend for it to bring feelings of joy and satisfaction to my audience. While each piece of art was designed to fit together in the series through the use of similar colours, style, and subject, they were also designed to be strong and able to stand alone. My paintings all shared the same medium; acrylic paint on a 14x14 canvas. I chose this because I am still trying to improve my skills with this medium. I also thought that the acrylic paint would be the best option to allow me to produce my dynamic brush strokes and bright, vibrant colors.
Overall, In my series of 6 flowers using acrylic paint, my goal was to create a united group of paintings that fit together effortlessly, but could also stand independently. I hope the paintings can make the audience feel lively, and happy with the bright colours and composition.
